Paste had the chance to speak with Boyle about his newest cli-fi project, a forthcoming novel titled The Terranauts that’s based on Boyle’s own environmental concerns.

Paste: Do you already have something new in the works?

Boyle: I have my new novel, The Terranauts, that’s based on my own environmental concerns, which will be out in Octobe 2016. It’s called The Terranauts and it portends to my environmental concerns. Specifically, it’s about the Biosphere experiment in the early 1990s in Arizona, where they built this artificial environment with 3,800 species inside, 4 men and 4 women for 2 years. Boy, is it fun! What I didn’t realize until I got into it is how sexy it is! Four men, four women, what are they gonna do? [Laughs] So I had a lot of fun with it. It’s comedic but it’s also about the Biosphere. Can we have an ''arrival environment''? Could we have ''alternate powering''? Can you recreate a ''self-replicating environment'' like the one we live in? Yeah, it’s a lot of fun.

MORE:

The new new novel is called “The Terranauts,” and it returns to my green roots — not to mention the darkly comic worldview that so appeals to me. “The Terranauts” is set in Arizona in the years 1993, 1994, 1995, and it deals with a (fictional) second closure of the Biosphere there, in which four men and four women were sealed inside an artificial environment for two years.

[NOTE: As T.C. BOYLE reached the halfway part of “The Terranauts” that is now complete and due for release in October 2016, he told an interviewer in New York:]

''As I approach the halfway mark, I am beginning to realize just how very, very sexy this concept is getting to be.  After all, what are they going to do in there for 730 long toothless dragged-down days?''

Joy Fowlkes asked T.C. Boyle:

Why haven't any of your books developed into major film or television projects?

T.C. Boyle [You need to understand, Joy,]  I do not work [in the film or TV] industry and will not participate. ......That said, many films have been made of my work, the biggest of which, in Hollywood terms, was Alan Parker's The Road to Wellville, starring Anthony Hopkins. Drop City would be ideal for a cable series, as would the new one, The Terranauts (coming in October). Right now several of my things are under option, including Budding Prospects (with Amazon) for a cable series.
